FLINDERS BAY RETREAT

This family holiday house overlooks the protected swimming area at Flinders Bay. For many years the owners have enjoyed happy times here and often dreamed of extending and rejuvenating the home. Their aspiration was to retain the character and spirit of the house with the challenge to provide extensive additional accommodation within strict height and setback requirements.

The design was led by the desire to comfortably accommodate 10 guests. This includes 5 double bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and a laundry / bathroom; a large kitchen and scullery; a dining room suitable for family feasts as well as intimate weekend meals; 2 large living areas with flexibility to be combined with the dining room as a spacious entertaining area. The kitchen and adjacent dining area open to an expansive renovated northern deck with an added covered alfresco that overlooks the bay through peppermint trees.

The project included full landscaping and external works with a stone walled courtyard, bespoke recycled timber benches around a fire pit, an outdoor shower enclosure, a fish cleaning sink, wood shed, garage, stone retaining and boundary walls, lawn and exotic and native plantings.

The home includes luxury finishes and features such as travertine flooring with under floor heating, Velux skylights, natural stone and timber features, and traditional roof pitching and verandah details. Finished in tones of white, the scale of the house is softened and restrained to evoke the earlier home while offering an elegant, modern and spacious setting for holidays.
