CARLON BUILDING AUGUSTA W.A.

THE TREE HOUSE
This extensively renovated house is set amongst the boughs of mature wind blown Marri trees. It sits on a steeply sloping site with panoramic views.
The challenge was to create a modern home and office within the existing 3 storey building envelope, while respecting it’s unique design intent and character. Key moves included relocating the master suite to the top floor adjacent to an office and relocating the stair from the centre of the structure thereby freeing up the middle floor level for living, dining and a generous kitchen. Significant structural changes were made along with new walls, ceilings and newly plumbed wet areas.
Extensive windows and glazed doors were added to connect to the outdoor terraces and enjoy the views to the forested scarp in the west, over the Hardy Inlet to the north and eastward out to the ocean.
Relocating the stairs involved additional floor structure using reclaimed jarrah jetty timbers for posts and beams. Careful excavation by hand below the structure, into the hill provides improved access to the self contained lowest level. A wall of local rock gives drama to the base of the new 3 storey stairwell and links with rock retaining walls that lead out from the house.
Woven into the Marri tree canopy a new deck is supported by more large jetty timbers. The deck of solid jarrah boards sits over custom stainless steel roof trays weather protecting the carport below.
This house showcases exceptional detailing skills with a palette of materials that are robust for the harsh location while creating a harmonious relationship between the house and its natural setting.
